Solid fuel boilers are burning wood, pellets, or coal, so they produce significantly higher flue temperatures, more soot, and a greater risk of chimney fires than gas appliances. That's why the chimney must be rated for extreme heat and built to contain a soot fire safely.
Where gas boiler chimneys prioritise corrosion resistance and precise sizing for low-temperature exhaust, solid fuel installations demand higher temperature ratings (450°C - 600°C), thicker insulation to maintain strong draft, and certified soot-fire resistance to protect the building if unburned deposits ignite inside the flue.
